Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

3.0

Ultimately going with a strong 3 stars. This was super fun and entertaining. It was like one of those Netflix original shows that get churned out, where the acting is just okay and the CGI is absolutely cheesy, but it’s just so easy to binge and mindlessly watch while eating dinner. I also went into this with low expectations and I think that helped. I needed something fast and easy for my last book of the year for my reading challenge so my only expectation was that Fourth Wing would be fast-paced and it delivered on that.

What almost made it 4 stars were the dragons because I absolutely loved their banter and personalities. Tairn was such a gruffy creature, but you knew in his heart he really cared for Violet. Ugh I loved him and his snide remarks! And Andarna was the cutest. As far as side characters go, Rhi and Rodic have my heart. They had such fun energy and personalities— I really wish side characters were more fleshed out or that we got their POV. I’d absolutely read an entire book on Rhi. I loved the queer and nonbinary rep and that characters’ ethnicities and skin tones weren’t ambiguous but explicitly stated. People's sexualities and gender just were and existed. I liked knowing black and brown people were in this fantasy world when, sometimes, mainstream/popular fantasy books within by white authors fail to mention stuff like that. The world building was cool to see and hey, I'm gonna be honest, I truly enjoyed the smut scenes!!
