The Outside Circle by Patti Laboucane-Benson

It's a distressingly common story - a young man, who has been cut off from his culture and family by genocide, has to rebuild an identity for himself.

Even though I've seen this general outline so many times, I appreciated how much of this serves essentially as a healing guidebook. We follow Pete on his journey, and we see both his setbacks and his triumphs. And I like that the focus is on community therapy, rather than treating it like an individual journey (because genocide creates collective trauma, not just personal trauma).

The artwork is beautiful. It's a little photorealistic for my tastes, but that made it stand out more when stylizations were used.
