The Black Bird Oracle by Deborah Harkness

5.0

It's no secret that A Discovery of Witches is one of my favorite book series ever. In 2011, long before bookstagram was in my life I was just a young woman, deep in the throws of first time motherhood, experiencing the heaviness of postpartum depression, strolling the bookstore and searching for something. Anything.

I have book series that shaped me as a child, books that I grew up with, aged with alongside the MCs. But to find a series like that as an adult feels like a special kind of magic. Aging and experiencing life and firsts alongside Matthew and Diana all these years has been an absolute pleasure and one I hope continues for years to come!

So how do I review a book that is 13 years in the making? A book i've been waiting on for for the last 6 years? Honestly, I don't know, but i'll give it a shot!

This book begins when the twins, Pip and Rebecca are seven, and receive a formal demand from the congregation to be tested as to determine the extent of their powers. At the same time Diana receives a summons from a great-aunt she didn't know existed to return home to Ravenswood, home of the Proctor Witches, home to Dianas fathers side of the family.

Something I loved about this book was that we are still learning so much about this world that is so expertly crafted by Harkness. I have read ADOW countless times and was blown away at the depth of world building there was still to do, the extent of magic we still have left to explore, and the shifts and changes in relationships still left to experience! Deb continues to outdo herself with these books!

In the Black Bird oracle you have old favorite characters that return and new characters that will become favorites in no time as they guide Diana along her path of higher darker magics, a path that will test Diana and Matthew in ways like never before! I loved to see M&D's relationship continue to flourish and be tested all these years later in ways that make sense as spouses, parents, and most importantly- individuals. This story at its heart is a fantastic tale of a woman honoring her role in her family and the mantles placed on her over the generations, a woman well aware of the weight of expectations held to her by the opinions of others as well as herself, but fighting and reclaiming HER IDENTITY and HER POWER outside of the tables she's carries.

I cried more than once, was encouraged by Deborah's words on the paper in ways that affect my own life more than once, had chills when a beloved character was on the page briefly (we are still anxiously waiting his book Deb!), and gasped audibly as the last few pages of this story came full circle. I can't wait to see what's in store for this series!

All in all, this is a wonderful addition to a series that has my whole heart. 5 stars!
