God Emperor of Dune by Frank Herbert

4.0

3.5

I'm starting to think the whole series might be worth a back to back re-read.
I surprisingly enjoyed following a mostly new cast of characters so many years (centuries!) after Children of Dune.
Herbert did a great job in taking full advantage of writing essentially about the same family, but without dragging the same characters' stories for way too long risking to alter them beyond recognition.
I see why Dune is regarded by many as a series that just goes downhill, though I don't entirely agree. Doing something very different in tone and structure from book to book it's a risk, and none of the ones I read was nearly as good as the first one; however, Dune has been pretty good even when not at its best (at least so far).

The whole evolution of the environmental, ethical and political themes frome Paul's Jhiad to Leto II's Golden path actually makes so much sense.
The one INSUFFERABLE thing is how Herbert writes (most) women.
It just keeps getting worse. I had such great expectations for Irulan, for Alia, for Ghanima and I was so, so disappointed.

After book one THAT really went downhill. I liked Hwi and Siona as characters and I thought Nayla was fairly interesting though I saw the Judas parallel coming from miles away, but women just don't talk, think, work that way, ugh.
