At Swim, Two Boys by Jamie O'Neill
4.0

Two stories here: One, a touching love story between two teen boys watched over by their 30-something friend. Second and much larger, life in Ireland leading up to the failed Easter Uprising of 1916. Told through the lives of a shopkeeper and his family, a dying old friend and his family, and a duchess and her nephew, personal and national stories intertwine in a complex and at times bewildering saga. As other reviews have said, the novel is at times difficult to follow - mostly owing to the Irish idiom and place names. I learned a lot about the Irish and their perpetual unrest. Worth the effort.
