Never Fade by Alexandra Bracken

Beautiful, heartbreaking, heart wrenching.

So I have recently just reread this book because the filming has started!

I know a lot of people who found getting into The Darkest Minds quite hard and didn't take to the narration/writing of the story and I can see why, but I love this story and these characters. Ruby's narrating is profoundly intense and descriptive, she is a very perceptive person who is great at analysing situations.

A key factor that sticks out in this sequel is the relationship development between Chubs and Ruby. From a very tense, fear of danger (on Chubs' part) to a protective "I will always want to be with you." Their reunion had me choked up.

Then we have Ruby and Liam's reunion, which is much more conflicting and painful because of her erasure of his memories of her, and from this we got to understand more of Ruby's abilities and their spread. This relationship is not in a great place, for obvious reasons, but in the life or death situation they unite and can't leave the other.

We are introduced to many new characters, the most important, in my opinion, being Vida and Jude. Vida is feisty, fiercely loyal and ready for battle. Blazing blue hair and a firm demeanour, sprouting profanities every which way.

Jude contradicts that. He is a bright Sunshine (also his code name) who is scared of the dark and silence, attempts to fill all silences with talk. Jude is the one always waiting for Ruby to return back from a Op. He is heedless to being quiet in serious situations, always shouting "Roo!" to make sure Ruby is okay.

Cole is the last one I will write about. He is a Red and also Liam's older brother by three years. He is quite hard to describe. Definitely a leader, very strategic and blatantly loves Liam but both find it hard to express this to each other. A prominent moment is when the HQ is under attack, Jarvin activated the white noise which Ruby succumbs to and when it's over, Cole runs to get her out of their saying he is sorry because he couldn't get to her in time.

Never Fade still has me hooked three and a half years later.
