This is a book for people who like to take a stroll through other people's lives, especially when those lives unfold over generations. This is a character-focused story as much as it is a setting-focused story. If you want to read about the time period in a new way (a non-white way) then this book will be refreshing and enjoyable for you. Though the beginning was a bit slow, it quickly picked up and I found myself reading large swaths of it at a time.
