The Moon is Down by John Steinbeck

4.0

My appreciation of the writing of John Steinbeck just continues to grow more and more. This novella was such a good read!

The Moon Is Down is a fictional account of a town who is taken over by an invading army who in turn, occupies it. The Introduction says: “…few literary works in our time have demonstrated so triumphantly the power of ideas in the face of cold steel and brute force, and few have spoken so reassuringly to so many people of different countries and cultures.” (p. xxiv)

The Introduction itself was fascinating. This was one time where I decided to go against my norm of not reading an introduction until I’ve read the book. I very carefully began reading it in case I might happen upon anything spoilerish, and after a few sentences I knew that this introduction may just give information about the work that I’d like to know going into it. It definitely did and without any major spoilers!

With amazing descriptive writing and a preciseness in words, Steinbeck told a story in a short amount of pages that has the weight of a full novel. It packs a punch and closes with a powerful, emotion-filled last scene. I just continue to be stunned by Steinbeck’s skill in writing!

If you’ve never read any Steinbeck, this would definitely be a great one to start with.
