2.5 Stars. (Pretty much spoiler free but skip this review if you wanna go in completely blind)
Hmm no more Ker Dukey books for me I think.
In psychological/romantic thrillers, proper pacing is a delicate balance. The majority of the book needs to be vague enough to keep readers guessing, and the twists need to make sense without being obvious. With that being said, I feel like because Dukey's books are on the shorter side, she nails the vague/mysteriousness aspect at the expense of good character and plot development.
I was definitely kept guessing for most of the book, but by the end I found that I really didn't care for any of the characters or even for the romance, because I didn't form an attachment with it. With all the confusion of "who's the killer/what is happening/what's the twist gonna be" there was no time for me to get behind the romance. I simply did not care because I didn't know who to trust. I didn't even trust the MC, because she gave me unreliable narrator vibes.
(Okay this next part might be seen as a spoiler so this is your official warning!)
By the end I had already figured out what the twists would be, but the way in which everything unfolded felt very rushed. The whole book was just meandering thoughts and Marco Marco Marco, and then suddenly it was like BOOM phone call BOOM misunderstandings BOOM running away in shock BOOM right into the killer's arms BOOM the situation gets resolved BOOM epilogue. Think my summary of the events was rushed? Think again because that's pretty much the pace of the actual book.
So, two stars because of that rushed ending.
