3.5ish? TW: rape, assault, trial, racism. The story is compelling with multiple people’s POVs whose lives have been changed by one horrible event. When Gloria/Glory Ramirez show up at a family’s doorstep beaten within an inch of her life and in shock, it launches not only Glory’s story of survival and healing but also the stories of others this moment had a domino effect for. In 1970s Texas, there’s drought, cattle, and dust. There are also good ol’ boys abound who small towns will defend.
It’s hard to sit and read all of the same things we hear and see today about how the girls ruin the young men’s lives, how the color of their skin makes them less reliable, how what women wear qualifies as evidence against her. The blatant sexism and racism is still all too prevalent today.
We also spend a lot of time in the mind of mothers. What is in a mothers love, what makes a good or bad one, how to not lose yourself with the title of mother. I felt like we could have spent more time with Glory, and that there were some pacing issues, but overall a good book worth reading. I will also point out that it’s one of those books with no quote marks for dialogue, but I didn’t find that too confusing.
