I’ve enjoyed the easy read feel to this series but I’ll also say that’s a criticism as much as a compliment. I just didn’t care about these characters the way I did about Covere or anyone in the Illuminae files. This whole series just lacked the character details that I loved about his other works. Which isn’t to say these characters weren’t fleshed out or stagnant in their development because they were fleshed out and developed further than diesel could have teleported them. But something about this whole series just fell a little flat to me.

I liked the twist on the chosen one trope. I liked that even robots got a chance. I liked that this mixed match of machine, human and super solider all got a chance to choose their own fates in the end. But again the stakes in this felt high but I never felt panicked by them. Characters died and I just didn’t react. Which says a lot as I cry at Ads with puppies for godsakes. I think ultimately this series tried to be too much. If we’d stuck to one theme, one conflict, a smaller cast of characters I may have felt differently.

True cert I really enjoyed this series despite it flaws and I hope we all learn to take our lives, minds and hearts to be our own in the end.
