This is a suspenseful historical novel inspired by a real midwife named Martha Ballard who lived during the late 1700s. It involves a rape, a murder, and a trial. Her expertise is in high demand while she also tends to her large, complex family. The story is well executed, the characters are intricate, and the writing is beautiful. A wonderful book!
