We Are All Made of Stars by Rowan Coleman

2.0

This is a tricky book to review. I think it really needs 2 and a half stars as 2 is unfair but I couldn't justify a 3! I was captured quickly by the premise of this book and the opening letter is beautifully written. The main story is interspersed with the letters Stella writes for her patients and these are the highlights of the book.

It was hard to have any major empathy for either Stella or Vincent but I can't give you a good reason why. They are well written and, I guess, believable. I liked Hugh but not his ending. I couldn't warm to Hope or Ben. There are some beautiful moments - Issy's letter for example.

I feel a bit cheated. The book starts so well but then becomes a bit self-indulgent (even down to the 'about the author' bit or the snippet reviews - I am irrationally irritated that Miranda Dickinson refers to the book as "Stars") and I feel the author could have done so much more with it.
