The Crankypants Tea Party by Barbara Bottner

2.0

The cover makes this book look like a lot of fun, but nothing about it worked for me. Each line of dialogue is preceded by the speaker's name and a colon, and because this picture book is not otherwise structured like a play, I found this distracting and off-putting. Also, the characters lack development, and many of the dark, colorful illustrations are so chaotic that it is hard to know where to look.

I did not like the story either. It could be funny to see cranky stuffed animals at a tea party, but the story revolves around their bad attitudes and complaints beforehand, rather than showing what went down while they had tea. The book is choppy, going from one complaint to another, and the changes of heart and sudden shift at the end did not provide a satisfying ending.
