There are some books you read for character and some books you read for world and plot, and H.G. Wells's "War of the Worlds" is a book you read for world and plot. In imagining the world being invaded by martians, how they would land, adapt, attack, and then ultimately fall is done wonderfully, with descriptions capable of transporting you to the world where aliens are attacking, giving you a clear picture of their machines.

The climax and resolution are well foreshadowed through the action, so although there is not a ton of character development in this book... that's not why this book was created. The world is cool, the descriptions are vivid, and the plot is tight and well thought out. It's clear why this is a classic even 100 years after it was written.
