Fevre Dream by George R.R. Martin

4.0

A thrilling vampire novel set aboard a nineteenth-century American steamboat!  This is one book I never saw coming, and not just because it’s less than four hundred pages long.  *Side-eye at those Fire & Ice doorstops*

My childhood spins around the Disneyland pond on the Mark Twain didn’t prepare me for how treacherous the mighty Mississippi once was.  Supernatural horror components work perfectly in this environment, (just ask Anne Rice), even when they pale in the face of American slavery—Martin’s nightmare is no white-washed chronicle of history.  The author’s luscious writing, stunning attention to detail, and magnificent characters made for an unforgettable dark adventure.
