The Rival by Kendall Ryan
5.0

Kendall Ryan has done something here that I so enjoyed in this book. Usually (not always), there is a bad/negligent guy and our heroine who deserves so much better when there is a breakup in our beloved romance novels. In the Rebel, Eden's breakup with Alex left you sure to dislike the shallow playboy, and it prepped you to love her with Holt all the more. But as I sit here reveling in the good vibes from The Rival, I am remembering Eden and concluding how great a job Kendall did with both of these books. You see, even in romance novels, people are flawed. Eden came across as shallow at the beginning of The Rebel. Alex definitely came across as shallow in The Rebel--so let's see what happens.

What we see is Alex is so much more than what he appears. He knows he's made mistakes not only in his personal life but in his professional one as well. He's determined not to crash and burn his career. Aspen is getting over a bad breakup and starting over. Aspen and Alex are both attending the engagement party of Eden and Holt and hang out as both are feeling way out of place. Eden ends up with an invitation to housesit/caretake a team member's house, and our setting is in place. Alex ends up there to take care of outdoor chores and ends up building a friendship with Aspen. We get to know both of these people and discover just how perfect they are for each other. Alex feels free to be who he is without pressure to perform and be THE HOCKEY PLAYER. Aspen feels like she's appreciated and seen. It's a great love story and watching these two find each other is just divine.
