The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell

dark mysterious tense medium-paced
  • Diverse cast of characters? No
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated
I wasn't that interested in the story until about 200 pages and the story picked up. I really enjoyed it after that, but I wish there was more focus on Henry's perspective as I was more interested in the infiltration of the house and how the cult came to be.
There are some weird moments and elements in the book that didn't need to be there, such as making the journalist who reported the story when Libby was a baby her love interest and never addressing some of Henry's actions, both when he was a teenager and as an adult.
I liked that the ending is up to the readers interpretation, but it felt like the story wasn't finished and needed to be fleshed out more.
