A slower inbetween book.

Egwene and Rand have been interesting contrasts for a few books now; both traumatized heavily by previous events,
both by imprisonment of some sort,
and trauma reacting similarly to their experiences by seeking power but in different ways. Egwene does it through soft power
with her solidifying her Amyrlin Seat authority through ancient war law
, and Rand through hardening and harshness. Makes me wonder if Robert Jordan did this deliberately as metaphors for saidar and saidin?

In any case this is fully in the ”slog” phase of the series, but there’s still plenty interesting going on if you like to deep dive the characters, their motivations, and all the layered meanings through the lenses of unreliable narration. I’ve read this series a few times now with years between each, and this was definitely boring as a more impatient reader in the past, but it was rewarding to catch things happening under the surface now that I’m willing to take time with it, which is what I’d recommend people do. There’s a lot outside of the book to read and talk about from both RJ himself and the fan community if you were into that kinda thing too; I miss a lot of the stuff happening through implication and find out later by reading insights from others which I enjoy
like saidin being weird for Rand and the Ashaman because of the Bowl of Winds, I totally didn’t make that connection

Not my favorite of the series but not bad at all.
