Brothers in Arms: One Legendary Tank Regiment's Bloody War from D-Day to V-E Day by James Holland
5.0
For someone who has read hundreds of military history books over the decades I cannot praise this highly enough. It is absolutely granular and gripping in its comprehensive following of D-Day to the end of the war through one tank regiment. I learned so much about what life was like for these men, and have developed an incredible sense of how amazing they were to face it all. Just two glimpses to illustrate the nature of what I was learning... the role of the Chaplain..... and the fact that even in the final days of the war it was still a complete game of chance as to who survived and who did not.
Not for the faint hearted, the descriptions of what war does to people is totally unfiltered, but if you want to know what it must have been like, and the burden that fell on incredibly young shoulders, read this.
