A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess

4.0

That book took me forever to read. It’s not because of the subject matter, I can handle violence and psychological distress in a story, but because the author chose, deliberately, to have his narrator speak in a invented dialect of quasi English.

In Kubrick’s movie, it actually works better than in the book, in part due to McDowell’s stellar performance. In the book it’s relevant but slows me down. And that’s maybe my problem with it. The movie is such a formidable adaptation that I think it actually drives the message home better than the novel.

The book is more detailed, of course, but that extra material doesn’t help understanding the story really, not in my opinion anyway. So yes, this book is important and relevant but tedious to read, especially at the beginning.
