Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel

3.75

i didn't realize that this was a retelling of the ramayana when i started, but about halfway through i remembered i had read this story before in a picture book as a child! crazy stuff. i loved how it was told from kaikeyi's pov, in the abbreviated and illustrated version of the original she's only briefly mentioned and is exclusively antagonistic.

i really enjoyed the first 2.5 parts, keikeyi and yudhajit's relationship was my favorite and i loved how her voice changed as she got older. the last parts were SO SAD. i was expecting it but still....
literally fated to be the enemy of the gods. RIP!

changed my rating to 3.75 because i saw some interesting critiques that i actually do agree with but hadnt conceptualized when i finished the book... i do think that the feminism is pretty watered down run of the mill and could have been better executed.... more to think about
