Plantains and Our Becoming: Poems by Melania Luisa Marte

emotional reflective

4.0

I really enjoyed this! It took me a few poems to get into the style, but once I did I really loved Melania Luisa Marte’s writing. Her writing is super rhythmic and melodic, and her poetry invokes such vivid imagery, which I loved. The first two sections of the collection were really strong for me, and I liked the thematic differences in each section. I particularly enjoyed how she started with exploring her personal identity and family history, then moved into talking about the history of the DR and Haiti and the legacy of her people. My interest waned a little once I got to the last section, but it was definitely a me thing, and not an issue with the book. My brain was tired of reading poetry and wanted to move onto something else so I powered through it (mistake) instead of waiting. But, this is a really strong and moving collection of poetry and I recommend it!
