Places We've Never Been by Kasie West
3.0

I received an eARC of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book was a very quick, cute read. It’s got childhood best friends reuniting and learning to navigate their new dynamic, complicated family conflicts, growing up and going to college, and discussion about women in traditionally male-dominated fields.

I love a good road trip story so this book definitely ticked that box. I enjoyed seeing how everyone interacted with each other and seeing how Norah and Skyler relearned their relationship. Norah’s dynamic with her brother was so cute and I really, really loved their own little storyline throughout the book.

Norah was, to me, a bit of an average main character. She wasn’t bad by any means but there wasn’t a whole lot about her that made her stand out from other protagonists in West’s books. Skyler was similar- nothing bad about him but also nothing really notable.

There were a number of typical Kasie West-style moments of humor and shennagains that fit right into this road trip story. These moments all helped to keep the book moving and led to come great conflicts in the plot.

Despite these cutesy factors and some of the other more serious topics like growing up, illness, and workplace stereotypes/bias, I wasn't completely taken by the book. I think I'm just getting to the point where I can't really relate to them as much as I once did. I would still recommend her books, including this one, because they're great summer reads and do explore some really important topics in a way that feels relatable and authentic. I just think I'm aging out of them but would absolutely recommend them to teen readers who can relate to the topics of leaving high school, friendship drama, and familial conflict more than I can at this point in my life.
