Despite being the first book in the series, this felt very much like watching episodes 7 through 12 of a TV series. We were dumped right into the middle of plots and characters with very little introduction and just expected to accept everything. From other reviews I understand that this takes place in an already existing universe, but still - as the first book in the series you need to ease your readers into the setting.
The premise of this book is, quite frankly, ridiculous. I’m not buying this 23 year old girl being the head of the criminal underworld with older, more experienced and far more threatening guys just sort of accepting being under her thumb. She also is surprised at one point that the FBI want to talk to her and believes she isn’t enough of a person of interest for them to investigate her, even after she makes a big deal about basically running the entire criminal underworld?? Girl, pick a lane. She makes dumb oversights and behaves like a horny teenager for the entire story except that every now and again she shoots a gun and reckons that makes her a badass.
This felt like a teenage romcom trying to be a dark, gritty mafia story and it all felt a little silly. The plot points were vague and uninteresting and I just don’t care enough to finish the series.
That said, the quality of the audiobook was excellent. Duet style with plenty of engaging and immersive sound effects and that was probably the only thing that carried me through to the end.
