Forbidden Healing: A Young Adult Fantasy Adventure by Rachael Watson

4.0

I read this book because of the booktok! ;) Just wanted to let the author know. I can't imagine that marketing is super fun, but you're killin' it!

Minimal spoiler-ish, but better to be safe than ruin it for someone:

I feel like I talk about this in most of my reviews for books, but that is because it's most important to me: this book had varied, complex, believable characters. All of them have their own flaws and their choices are very understandable even if they are sometimes frustrating at the time. Except for Valora. She needs to be protected at all costs, obvi. Marlowe is the one that I feel the most aligned with at this point. I really think that Kyla has the most character growth potential. Stop drinking that kool-aid, girl.

Um... this book got waaaay darker than I expected and I was deeee-lighted to see it. Chapter 14 did not disappoint; my jaw actually dropped.

Wonderful world-building. Perfect pacing. I still have so many questions. LOVE a good obviously deeply flawed religion that is for sure hiding things and lying to the masses. Right? I think I'm right.... It is my sincere hope that they burn it at all and I'll have to snag the next book immediately since it is now available!

Only minor complaint: Much too short for my tastes, but honestly it meant that things didn't drag at all and we got the next book pretty quickly this way! Every page and word felt completely necessary.

Loved the book! Fantastic debut novel! I think I've found another immediately buy author.
