The Power by Naomi Alderman
1.0
I read this because I saw a lot of young people talking about how much they loved it on TikTok; after having put off the hunger games for years and years and years, only to absolutely love it once I finally got around to reading it, I’ve developed a “young people love it? put it on your TBR pile immediately” policy.
The very final scene (via email - I don’t want to be specific because of spoilers) is great. It almost made the rest of this gender essentialist nonsense worth it.
I hope my future self remembers that just because a chef includes a lot of my favorite ingredients in a recipe, doesn’t mean I’m gonna love the final dish. I love dystopia, I love cults, I love powers - but the final result here felt harmful at worst, trite at best.
