The Rain by Virginia Bergin
1.0

Don’t get me wrong, i read the whole book, I finished it, I thought the premise was fun and I’m a sucker for apocalypse stories, even if they may be overdone. However. The main character was absolutely insufferable. She’s narcissistic, shallow, and whiny. Yes, she’s a teenager in a very shitty situation. But she’s also, quite genuinely, a mean girl who has no redeemable qualities. Now, you can write characters who have these traits that are still somewhat likeable. And I really spent the entire book thinking that she would get better, and then she just… didn’t. By the end of the book, I was actually so uninterested in whether she would survive or not that I just… didn’t look to see if there was a sequel. I put it back on my shelf and forgot about it. There was a cliffhanger, impending doom, and yet I didn’t care at all what was going to happen to her. Really, the whole point of writing a character in an apocalypse situation is to make you root for them, and I think that the author entirely missed the mark.
