This is a terrific spy/thriller set largely in Madrid in 1940. Encompassing the period of history following the brutal Spanish Civil War and the early stages of WWII, Sansom re-creates the ruinous state of the city, Spain and its people, at that time. The plot, characters, dialogue and atmosphere are all superb. More like watching a movie than reading a book. Spain has come a long way since these dark and dangerous times.
