The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion by Jonathan Haidt

5.0

Haidt did it again! (better than his last book, even). The Righteous Mind draws from an array of scholarship (psychology, anthropology, religion, philosophy, political science) and combines them to explain the origins of morality in evolutionary history. Haidt goes on to explain how morality has shaped culture, particularly in the realm of politics in the U.S. where conservatives and liberals focus on different aspects of morality (Care/harm, Fairness/Cheating, Liberty/Oppression, Loyalty, Hierarchy, and Sanctity).

Discussions on the Hive Switch and multi-level selection were fascinating (the feeling we get at a rave, a church, a bonfire, etc. when we lose our sense of self and become one with the people around us). His assessment of conservatives and liberals from statistical analysis were spot on. The elephant and the rider analogy for the intuitive and rational made perfect sense. An amazing book. Highly recommend.
