From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Upon finding out this won Goodreads Choice for Fantasy last year, I decided to pick this up and give it a go and I definitely have mixed feelings.

I definitely enjoyed my reading experience and thought this was a fun entry point to this series, however my main issue is I feel like I have read this story so many times before. This is such a stereotypical YA story and Armentrout adds nothing new to it. Packed full of common tropes and the ending was so predictable that it kind of ruined the whole book for me.
Poppy and Hawke as characters feel like they’ve been copied and pasted from any other YA angsty romance story and they felt devoid of any original personalities. Even their romance felt very empty.
Finally I feel this had severe pacing issues and whilst the first half was interesting, the more the book went on, the less interested I became.

I can see the intrigue for other readers, but as I don’t like authors like Sarah J Maas, I’m not surprised I didn’t love this as I feel their stories are in the same vein.
