The Choice
by Nicholas Sparks
I was hesitant buying this book. I wasn't in the mood for another sappy romance with unreasonable emotions, yet I bought it cos I didn't find anything else interesting in the neighborhood's library that day.
I did not regret buying it till the beginning of part 2. Part one was a sweet story set, as usual in Spark books, in a cozy and friendly small city, with wonderful views and a water front house (also a recurring item in Spark books). I enjoyed reading every page, emotion and sentence.
All this changed in part 2. I do understand that part one was some kind of a prologue for the real story and 'the choice' as described in part two, but I couldn't be bothered to read the whole of it. I would skip pages on end to avoid the heart wrenching sadness. It didn't feel a little bit like sweet sorrow. Just plain pain and sadness. It felt like a totally different book: the one I didn't want to buy.
Worse still the ending was quickly hashed and a bit unconvincing, even though it was faithful to the spirit of the story. I wish I had stopped reading at the end of part one. That was a story in itself.
