Baby Doll by Hollie Overton
4.0

A lot of times, we only get to read about what happens leading up to the big event (the "why" and the execution) and then getting to see the whole thing crumble down around the big bad, leaving us wondering what in the hell happens next but in Baby Doll, we get a chance to see what happens as things crumble for the last big time and then we get to see what happens to the big bad and the victims after. I've always wanted to read a book that lets us in on the secrets after a rescue. Not just a quickly rushed summary and a massive time jump. Finally, I have found that book and actually enjoyed it - despite what the many seemingly low but still mixed reviews stated. There were a few minor annoyances riddled throughout but I find that I rarely like a book from the first word to the last and when I do, that still doesn't always warrant a 5⭐ review. I'm leaving this at 3.5⭐ to 4⭐ because I really did enjoy the storyline and most of the characters. I do think this was a fantastic idea and could have even been a bit more descriptive. (I'm a Stephen King fan, remember?) I found the ending chapters to be a bit rushed, leaving me feeling half-finished but, over all, I liked this and would recommend. There is closure at the end of the tests and heartbreak.

Also: I definitely could feel the "for fans of Gone Girl" vibes where most others apparantly did not. I don't know if perhaps it is that I'm not that skilled of a reviewer or if my bar is set lower for whatever reason but I feel that it doesn't get the reads that it probably deserves. 🤷‍♀️
