Feeling the absolute worst is supposed to make feeling the best worthwhile. I think that's the theory that leads to plots that seem to end with tragedy only to have the voice of the lost love one crackle to life on the radio that everyone has all but given up listening to. I don't think we need the happily-ever-after to make the book satisfying. I think of Dickens and A Tale of Two Cities, "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known." Sometimes the hero has to die. I'll give it the five stars for the rest of the book, but I really don't like the ending.
