An atmospheric and engaging book, great vacation read. I found our protagonist Noemí charming. There are some inspired conceptual choices, some gross and vivid imagery, a thoughtful and rich backdrop of Mexican history that plays cleverly off of the classic Gothic tropes of the ancestral English mansion in decay. That said, the book embraces some of the most well-trodden tropes of the Gothic novel so thoroughly that the story beats feel predetermined. A savvy reader knows where it’s going before it gets there.
