It balances fate-of-the-universe space opera stakes with much more small scale personal stories in a really interesting way. First book in the Hyperion omnibus is a story in seven parts, as each of the pilgrims reveals their history with the Shrike, a malevolent entity that stalks the planet Hyperion. The second book is a minutes-to-midnight potboiler that sees humanity try to contain an Interstellar war while the original protagonists close in on their goal. It's intriguing to read and immensely satisfying to finish.
