There were parts of this I really enjoyed and others I wasn't a big fan of. I thought the magic system was interesting - especially the portal magic. (I wasn't super attached to a lot of the characters, though there were a couple I did like (and I was not a fan of the main character in the beginning). There's a bit of a love triangle in this, or rather the start of one, though I have my guesses on who will be the ending love interest. We follow our female main character who is a half Aelfyn princess who must train her newly obtained magic to serve the kingdom.
You spend a lot of this book training, which make sense, and there's a little bit of other plot mixed in. I would also say that any romance is definitely side-plot. Overall it wasn't bad, and I think I'm curious enough to try book 2.
