When We Make It
by Elisabet Velasquez
Just finished “When We Make It” by Elisabet Velasquez.
Everything she has written about life in Brooklyn in the 90s and growing up not knowing the Puerto Rican culture while having to deal with racism, poverty, and abuse spoke to me on so many levels.
I remember feeling out of place and struggling with my identity. To be seen. To be heard. And reading Elisabet’s poem “CAN I BE PUERTO RICAN” definitely described my feelings to the core.
10/10 would highly recommend it.
