Vita Nostra
by Marina Dyachenko, Sergey Dyachenko
I’m not sure how I feel about this book. It was very odd and yet so compelling. So much so, that I simply overheard part of this book as my husband was listening to it and I made him start over with me. Once I began the book I couldn’t put it down despite its strangeness and incompatibility with my reading preferences. That being said, I can’t recommend it to everyone- it’s just too out there. I’m not even sure if I liked it. But this book might be your taste depending on your answers to these questions:
- Have you ever wished that Hogwarts took place in a Ukrainian nightmare setting? If so, you may enjoy this book.
- Are you a fan of strange magic systems that are so mysterious that you never truly figure out what’s going on? If so, you may enjoy this book.
- Do you speak Russian? Perhaps you will enjoy this book in its original language. Who knows, it might even make more sense in that language.
- Do you wonder if you are truly human? If so, don’t read this book. It will make you wonder all the more, and I don’t think that’s healthy.
All in all, this book really pushed me out of my comfort zone. That’s what a good book is meant to do.
