When My Name Was Keoko
by Linda Sue Park
A beautifully written book about two Korean kids living at the tail-end of the Japanese occupation of Korea. Linda Sue Park is really adept at writing about the harsh reality through a child’s eyes, and how they cope with these unbelievably difficult situations they are in. I appreciated how distinctive Tae-yul and Sun-hee’s voices were as well — they were experiencing (mostly) the same events, but processed and dealt with them in different ways. While I won’t go as far as to say I enjoyed reading this book, as the things these children experienced are quite terrible, it is a well-written depiction of the time period and well worth the read if interested.
