Solaris
by Stanisław Lem
Was expecting to enjoy this but did not. About half way through the author begins a description of various activities occurring on the planet - the detail is excrutiating and the plot is forgotten while these activities are catalogued by the author. After the descriptions are finished the rest of the book often veers into similarly detailed introspections by the main character. I seldom need to skip or skim through books but this one was difficult for me to finish, short as it is. Too bad, though, because the premise is great and the focus on the planet as a character is unique.
