Ironically the worst part of this book was the main smut scene. It wasn't bad but it became glaringly obvious why the author chose a spider alien as her main character, and I feel like for an otherwise well-paced book, the scene belonged more in the second book of a series rather than the first one. The author spends all this time slow burning this relationship building up to monster mashing, and she couldn't let that be enough. It's not enough that she sold the readers on fucking a giant spider, she had to include another popular kink that a spider man would just happen to be predisposed to (I'm being vague to avoid spoilers). It broke immersion. The second I read "anchors," my eyes rolled back into oblivion. She showed her hand too early with that one. I think it would have been better to let the taboo of fucking a giant spider man be enough and only incorporated further kinks to spice it up later.

That being said, this book is great despite the ending being a little unsatisfactory and coming out of nowhere. The character dynamics and the relationship is great. I found myself caring way to much about alien spider culture and the friend group. There's an over-arching plot and room for growth. I tore through this book. I'll probably buy it if it goes on sale.
