Carve the Mark
by Veronica Roth
When I was reading it, I read it as a quick fun read and immersed myself in the book without thinking too critically of it. Roth created a new galaxy full of different cultures, languages, and traditions, which I enjoyed. I liked the two main characters (they didn't feel too cookie-cutter) and that their perspectives altered throughout the book. I did not pick up on the problems other people have found with this book (racism, romanticizing chronic pain and cutting, ableism). After reflection I do see how others could find it problematic, especially in terms of romanticizing chronic pain and cutting.
