I did enjoy "This Perfect Day" but there's a few things that prevent it from being a dystopian classic to me. It does feel reminiscent of other books such as "Brave New World" which harms its originality and I can't help but feel that it feels slightly pulpy at times due to its pacing. I found the central mystery engaging but Chip quite an unlikable protaganist for a number of reasons
(although I do have to say his rape of Lilac is chief among them)
. I will give the benefit of the doubt and say that this was intentional and, arguably Chip's demeanor is one of the reasons for his rebelliousness. Nonetheless, it is sometimes a challenge seeing the world through the eyes of an unlikable character.

The tension is by far the strongest aspect of this book and I found myself reading in longer and longer sessions as I neared the conclusion of the novel due to how well set-up this was.

I would say, on balance, I did enjoy this book but it is not one I can see myself rushing to read again unlike other (better) dystopian fiction I've read. For a fan of the genre, it is probably a little too cliche but, if you can look past the awkward sexual writing and aren't so familiar with dystopia's tropes I can see it being a decent read for a new-comer. A hesitant recommendation from me.
