A Veil of Truth and Trickery by Analeigh Ford
3.0
Okay. Understand that this is not *good* by any metric. HOWEVER, I got so much of a bizarre enjoyment from this book, it gets three stars and a library hold on book two.
Contributing to my experience was:
The audiobook narrator used one tone for the whole book; so it was very funny to me when FMC who hates the fae and is terrified of them, periodically really wants to bone several of them.
The beginning of the book has this girl wanting to stay at her employer's for the holiday (which is apparently a regular choice for her), rather than go to her home village because it sucks and people are mean to her. BUT THEN, when we need a reason for her to not want to leave the sucky sucky human realm, suddenly she has a little sibling at home who she adores
Fae *fluids* have healing powers. FLUIDS
Mostly, the various fae princes who are all in love with FMC are totally indistinguishable. Are they all 7 feet tall? Just the one guy? I'm unclear. HOWEVER, Nyx the horny himbo of the forest has already carved out some kind of personality for himself.
I care about Waylon, the demon servant. And Tallulah, the woman-at-arms for one of the prince hunks. I would like book 2 to be the enemies-to-lovers of FMC and Tallulah, and they run off with Waylon as their bestie.
I took to listening to this book at the gym. That particular experience is probably what cranked this up to three whole stars. Keeping a more-or-less straight face while it's described that the FMC's chest is resting against 7-foot-tall-prince-hunk's waist cracked me up (inside).
I had to fully stop what I was doing when there was a scene of: fae-attacker-is-defeated-and-kind-of-tortured led into oh-noooo-FMC-is-wounded, prince-hunk-#3-must-heal-her-WITH-HIS-MOUTH, which then led to the revelation that this session of sexual healing took place directly in front of the VERY MUCH ALIVE AND AWAKE former attacker.
The more I recall that scene, the more I feel like it's a kind of art. A special treasure. The exact kind of scene you would want to take out of context, and make your friends read out loud in a group setting.
****
Like many people, I was led to this book via targeted ads. Unlike some people, I'm not mad at it.
