reading Umberto Eco is like making barbecue brisket: it's going to be delicious and savory and dense. And it's going to take a long fucking time for anything to actually happen. I read the first two thirds of this book wondering when the plot was going to start, but the reason why you might notice five stars on my review is that Eco makes the wait worthwhile. It's like standing next to the smoker, having a beer with your most interesting friend from college. You're not going to be able to follow everything he says, but it's a good time nonetheless.
I fear my metaphors might not be getting my point across but: I loved this book. It's probably not for everyone.
My one wish for this novel would have been for the women in the story to have more agency beyond furthering the male characters' development. Eco can write badass women, but he can't quite get them to move the story forward on their own terms.
