The Bees by Laline Paull

5.0

This book was raw, brutal and deeply, deeply compelling.

Told entirely from the perspective of a bee; we follow Flora 717 through her roles within the hierarchy of her hive.
Paull executes this book in a way that feels claustrophobic and emotion-driven, feeding us snippets of information as Flora 717 herself receives them. The book changes pace in line with her relationships with the bees in different areas of the hive, and the other characters (the spiders, the mouse, the wasps) all add perfect contrast and context to the work.

And. That. Ending. Oh my gosh! I could feel it coming - I kept thinking "Surely not. Could it be? It is! I can't be! Maybe I'm wrong! It is!".
Ten out of ten, I will be recommending this book to anyone who will listen.
