Gone to Soldiers by Marge Piercy

3.0

A long book and a bit confusing for the first 100-200 pages as you're learning about the main characters. Nonetheless, it's an interesting take on WW II with a close & fairly accurate look at the home front as things played out in Detroit, MI. Considering that the author consulted extensively with late Howard Zinn, the people's historian, it's not surprising that we get more than a Life magazine view of the home front, wartime production lines, and who benefitted (or not) from the employment opportunities. The author's treatment of the French Resistance, Vichy regime, and of course the Shoah are nothing new but are fairly well done. Have to agree with another reviewer that the male character who served as a Marine grunt in the Pacific front must have had nine lives, given how many of the critical battles & campaigns he got through between 1942 & 1945!
