The sharpest and most acidic of Austen's works I've read, but the rapier wit and incontestable correctness of her cynical observations delivered many genuine laughs. Fanny was an early prototype of the passive-aggressive martyr and too "good to be true", while her Aunt Norris was so noxious as to need having her quietus made. BUT all the characters were real and believable. Now my 2nd favourite after the sublime Persuasion
