Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
5.0
Holy. Fucking. Shit.
It’s taken me forever to post my full review simply because it’s impossible to fully capture just how much I LOVED this book! It’s on my all-time favorites shelf.
Here are some of the many things I loved about this book:
- Bree! She is such a badass. I loved her and felt for her so much. This book is the start of her coming of age story and about her processing her grief over recently losing her mother - the nuance and layers of this grief were so powerful and unlike anything I’ve read. Deonn’s descriptions of the physicality of grief especially BLEW me away.
- The writing overall is just so incredible.
- Love triangle! (#TeamSel)
- So many amazing characters! Alice and William were definite faves.
- Important themes: This book went SO much deeper than your typical fantasy read. The way that Deonn interwove important topics like racism, the history of slavery, grief and so much more into the core of the world was so real and so important and what made this book pack such a punch.
- The ENDING. I just CANNOT EVEN EXPRESS how perfect the last 100 pages of this book are. I LOVED IT SO MUCH.
- The author’s note!! I already loved the book but understanding Deonn’s ties and just how much research and thought went into every detail made me love it even more.
While the world building of the King Arthur secret society seems confusing (especially for someone who knows nothing about Arthurian Legend), I will pass on the good advice I was given: just embrace the confusion, it doesn’t matter and everything will be clear in the end!
This review does not do this book justice - please please please read it ASAP!!!!! Book 2 in the series cannot come soon enough, I need more!!!
